For the past 6 years, we’ve collected analytics through driver’s input, feedback, and behaviors and found three overarching principles to be critical to creating an award-winning training. Be on the lookout for what elements of the lessons touch on these aspects.

Each week we are going to release 1 teaching and learning strategy. These lessons will include estimated time, materials, and instructional procedures for classroom (F2F) and online teaching.

	Objectives Define the short-haul exception. Using a schedule, determine when time needs to be logged on paper vs ELD.

Instructional Procedures for F2F

1.	Arrange the classroom into small pods or training tables. On each table have note cards and markers. Write “short-haul exception” on the front side of the note cards.
2.	Instruct participants as they come in the classroom to choose a table. Their first task is to define short-haul exception on the back of the note cards.
3.	When all participants seem to have brainstormed their initial definitions, have students discuss in groups what they put. Have each group decide whose definition is closest to what they think is correct.
4.	One person from each group should share the card(s) they choose.
5.	After each group shares, provide the following information. Put it on a slide and project it. Short-Haul Exception: CDL drivers operating within 100 air miles of their normal work location and finishing their work day at their normal work location within 12 consecutive hours do not have to prepare a daily record of duty status of their activities.
6.	See who was closest to this idea.
7.	Have participants look at their original cards and use a colored marker to update it with this information.
8.	Then ask the class or show the slides: Does anyone know, how many times may a driver operate outside of the 100 air-mile radius exception before that driver is required to use an ELD?
9.	Show the slide: FMCSA decided the ELD rule should allow a 100 air-mile radius driver to operate outside the short-haul exception for no more 8 than days within any 30-day period, and still be exempt from the use of an ELD.
10.	Show the next slide: This means that, under the ELD rules, on the 9th day in any 30-day period, the typical ‘100 air-mile radius short-haul driver’ is ineligible for the exception and the driver must log the 9th day using an ELD.
11.	With drivers in their groups, have them use their schedules or driving scenarios at your business.
12.	Have them mark their schedules of when they are outside the 100 air miles for the past month, 2-months or 6-months. Provide a calendar if you do not have a schedule template. The goal is for them to visually see if they are eligible or ineligible for an exception. If they are not eligible, they will need to use their ELD.
13.	Then ask the class or show the slides: Does anyone know, if a driver operates outside the 100 air-mile radius exception for 9 or more days within any 30-day period, how long must this short haul driver use an ELD when operating his/her truck in the future. Forever? For a year? For a month? Until the cows come home?
14.	See how drivers respond. Optional: Throw gum or company branded gifts out to drivers who are engaged.
15.	Reveal: As soon as the driver is back within the “not more than 8 days within any 30-day period” portion of the rule, he/she can return to using a paper log on the days when he/she exceeds the 100 air-miles or the 12 consecutive hours restrictions.
16.	See if drivers have questions.

Instructional Procedures for Online

1.	Post the following prompts and directions in an online discussion board within your LMS like our eNuggets ®. • Define the short-haul exception in 1-2 sentences. • Review 1 of your peer’s posts and comment what you like about their definition. • Post 2-3 questions that you want to learn about the short-haul exception.
2.	Research and Report: Include the following directions for an online research activity. • Review online content about the short-haul exception [like Luma’s eNugget®] or post your policy. • Report back to the online discussion board answers to their questions or post any new questions they have for you. • Use a calendar template, and mark their schedules of when they are outside the 100 air miles for the past month, 2-months or 6-months. Provide a calendar if you do not have a schedule template. The goal is for them to visually see if they are eligible or ineligible for an exception. If they are not eligible, they will need to use their ELD. Have them post their schedules to the discussion board. • Ask drivers to also post or answer an assessment question: how many times may a driver operate outside of the 100 air-mile radius exception before that driver is required to use an ELD? They should get this information up front in the research and report activity.
3.	Optional: Individuals that engage in the discussion board by the deadline can earn points for the leaderboard (if you have one on the LMS) and prizes (hats, gum, t-shirts, certificates, etc). Make it fun!
