With all the tragedies from the past week, we are going to take this opportunity to focus our learning lesson on an important topic: Be Kind. Why? Just Bee Cause. This lesson idea comes to us from our friends at the Honey Foundation who dedicate their mission in memory of one of our transportation partner’s brothers, Scott Clarke, and the importance of Kindness. Read the story. As the Queen in the Be Kind Just Bee Cause book said, “If you want other bees to change, set the example of kindness, and ask for nothing in exchange.”

Interaction Types


For decades there has been discussions of interaction types in education. (Anderson, 2003) Most interaction types observed in driver training traditionally are learner to instructor or learner to content. Moreover, most interaction time with driver training and orientation is synchronous or at the same time. This Learning Strategy is going to help you think about ways you can hold training without a physical classroom.

The following Lesson is broken down into two different interaction times.


Lesson #41: Be Kind Just Bee Cause

Objectives

  • Brainstorm simple ways of showing kindness to others.
  • Act out ways to show kindness to others.

Materials

Instructional Procedures for Synchronous Training
(or at the same time without a classroom)

  1. Meet up in webinar technology, like LumaLive.
  2. AuthenticityShare videos so you can see each others’ reactions.
  3. AuthenticityEngagementPoll. Ask how many people have felt someone has been unkind to them.
  4. EngagementEither read The Kind Bee Just Bee Cause Children’s Book out loud as a large group or have them read it before they come to class.
  5. AuthenticityEngagementHold a discussion (Possible Questions):
    • How do you think Benny felt about being different? What do you think makes you unique or different from others?
    • What was your reaction to the Queen’s response? “If you want the other bees to change, set the example of kindness, and ask for nothing in exchange.” Do you agree? Why or why not?
    • Why do you think the Random Acts of Kindness made Benny feel better?
    • In the book it states: “The World can change, from one kind bee, the rest will happen, you will see. Just bee kind to whoever is in range, soon enough –the World will change.” What can you do to be that kind bee?
  6. AuthenticityRefer to the Bee Kind Worksheet. Have the participants share how they could be kind. Brainstorm ideas in the first column. In the second column, encourage them to make a plan to go out and implement kindness.
  7. AuthenticityMeet back up with the participants and discuss what happened as a result of their kindness. How did it make them feel?
  8. AuthenticityOptional: Send reminders to Be Kind Just Bee Cause throughout the year through text or emails.

Instructional Procedures for Asynchronous Training
(or not at the same time)

  1. EngagementHave participants read The Kind Bee Just Bee Cause children’s Book before you hold the discussion or you can tape yourself reading it on a video through a technology like LumaLive and post it in an eNugget® for them to watch.
  2. AuthenticityEngagementHold a discussion (Possible Questions) in a discussion board or post these questions as essay questions in an eNugget®:
    • How do you think Benny felt about being different? What do you think makes you unique or different from others?
    • What was your reaction to the Queen’s response? “If you want the other bees to change, set the example of kindness, and ask for nothing in exchange.” Do you agree? Why or why not?
    • Why do you think the Random Acts of Kindness made Benny feel better?
