Cargo Securement
Our free Luma Learning Lessons include objectives, estimated time, materials and instructional procedures for classroom and online/blended teaching. We will provide strategies on how to use our new LumaLive technology to collaborate virtually in real-time. We include these pillars from our learning research to illustrate where they are infused in our lessons.

Materials
|
1. | Explain to the class that the goal of the session is to be able to teach a peer how to properly secure different vehicle types. |
2. | Option: Set the class up that this is going to be a competition. Each pair that completes the worksheet completely and correctly will earn a prize. You can determine what that prize is and what constitutes a winner. Maybe it is lunch with the safety manager. Maybe it is a gas card. Do what is most meaningful to your team. |
3. | Pass out the Teach-a-Peer Worksheet. |
4. | Give the class a time limit. Set the timer. All groups must be back when the buzzer goes off or they are disqualified. You can give them an hour. This also helps teach time management and following directions. |
5. | If you are a Luma client, you can provide eNuggets® they can review on Cargo Securement in the field. You may also have your own materials/videos that they can use as an online reference that you can post in eNuggets®. |
6. | Have different vehicles outside that the participants must secure. Whatever they must secure must be appropriate for what you are hauling and what they have trouble with. If your drivers typically have trouble with paper rolls, have all drivers practice on paper rolls. |
7. | As participants come back into the classroom have them turn in their worksheets. |
8. | Go over each question and invite responses. Clarify any questions that they seem to have misconceptions about. |
9. | Share video examples that were shot on the scene. Go over what was done well and what might be improved. |
10. | Optional: Score the videos/worksheets after the class and reward the winners. |
1. | Set up an announcement that your goal is to reduce any cargo securement indicients. |
2. | Option: Include in the announcement that this project is going to be a competition. Each pair that completes the worksheet completely and correctly will earn a prize. You can determine what that prize is and what constitutes a winner. Maybe it is lunch with the safety manager. Maybe it is a gas card. Do what is most meaningful to your team. |
3. | Post the Teach-a-Peer Worksheet in the discussion board. |
4. | Give the class a time limit. Tell them to complete the worksheet by a specific date and time. This also helps teach time management and following directions. |
5. | If you are a Luma client, you can provide eNuggets® they can review on Cargo Securement in the field. You may also have your own materials/videos that they can use as an online reference that you can post in eNuggets®. |
6. | The task is that they must show in a video that they can teach another person to secure cargo. Whatever they must secure must be appropriate for what you are hauling and what they have trouble with. If your drivers typically have trouble with paper rolls, have all drivers practice on paper rolls. |
7. | Post in your announcement that they need to post their video and worksheets to the discussion board titled, Cargo Securement. |
8. | Most LMS’s are set up that discussion board posts will not show until you’ve posted your work. Set up the discussion board this way so only participants who have posted their assignment will see others |
9. | Invite participants to earn more points if they review and add feedback to others’ posts. |
10. | Optional: Score the videos/worksheets after the class and reward the winners. |
11. | If you have multiple sites, each site can have an in person celebration and the voting results can be streamed live via LumaLive or a similar synchronous tool as well. |
