Q&A: Get to Know Tricia Sloan
How did you get started in transportation, and what do you like about it most?
After college, I found my footing in trucking, spending three years in recruiting and safety before stepping away to work at a local shipyard for seven years. In 2018, transportation pulled me back in, that time in a marketing and communications role.
What I love most is the stories. Every person in this industry—driver, shop, office—carries a ‘why’ that brought them there. When a driver has that ‘why’ clearly defined, you see it in everything: safer habits, smarter decisions, the ability to find that balance between earnings and safety. And when someone on the office side stops long enough to really listen to that story, it changes how they make decisions. They lead with more compassion. They make driver-centric decisions.
What do you love most about working at Luma?
Before joining the team, I was already a huge Luma champion. What kept me coming back was how the team truly listened, not just to what I needed, but to what I was trying to accomplish, and then walked alongside me to find the right solution. Now that I’m on this side, I get to witness that commitment every single day. Every team member genuinely cares about our customers and the mission.
What’s one tip you would give our clients?
We are here as a true partner, not just for safety training, but for learning goals across your entire organization. I say that knowing I didn’t always take advantage of it myself. When I was a client, my customer success rep, Michelle, would regularly reach out to connect, and I kept putting it off. Now that I’m on this side, I can see exactly what I was missing: simple things like how to copy a learning path, duplicate an eNugget®, or just get quick answers to questions. Don’t be like past-Tricia. Take the meeting, and I bet in the end we save you more time in your process than the meeting takes.
What do you do in your free time (hobbies, interests, etc.)?
My happiest self has a camera in hand, looking for birds to photograph. My favorite bird to photograph is the chickadee. It’s always cheerful and willing to approach, and just spreads joy.
