Jim will be building and maintaining custom processes, workflows, and applications for our customers, overseeing technical support operations, and finding ways to enhance how we deliver service every single day. It’s a role that sits right at the intersection of engineering and customer experience, and Jim is uniquely built for it.
As a proven engineering leader with hands-on experience managing customer projects in industries closely aligned with ours, Jim brings both the expertise and the instincts to make an immediate impact. He’s the kind of person who’s always digging for the ‘why’ — getting to the root cause of an issue rather than settling for a surface-level fix. Pair that with his positive, uplifting energy, and you’ve got someone who makes the work better and the team stronger.

Q&A: Get to Know Jim Looney
What aspect of your work are you most passionate about?
Primarily doing whatever I can to help the team work as efficiently as possible. I enjoy process improvement and making tweaks to workflows, even if they save only minutes per day because it all adds up! I also enjoy working closely with customers, so this role looks like a nice mix of all those aspects.
What excites you most about joining Luma?
The culture and the team!
What’s something that people are often surprised to learn about you?
For part of 2022 and all of 2023, my wife, two kids, one dog and I travelled the country pulling a 30-foot camper. I worked full-time while on the road. Our goal was to hit as many national parks as we could. We ended up putting 32,000 miles on the truck and visited 41 national parks (as well as numerous other destinations). I love being on the road. It was one of the best years of my life.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy fossil hunting, hiking, kayaking, camping, and spending time with my family.
If you could instantly learn any new skill, what would it be?
Playing classical guitar!
