The Impact of Sugar in Our Diets on the Road

Nugget says Happy HalloweenIt is October, which means Halloween is right around the corner. We focused this month’s eNugget driver topic on the impact of sugar in our diets on the road. Sugar impacts our ability to work effectively. What does this mean if you are on the road driving? According to the national Sleep Foundation’s Sleep in America poll, 60% of people have driven while feeling sleepy. This means there are drivers out there who are driving when they are tired. When we asked drivers what they do if they feel tired on the road, it is surprising how many will say they will grab a drink. When you start asking what types of drinks they are grabbing…they are full of sugar. Yikes! Did you know that sugar actually impacts our ability to work effectively? In the next couple of days, pay attention to how much sugar you are consuming. This means paying attention to what you are eating and drinking throughout a given day.

If you are tired, worn out, depressed, and/or irritable, consider that sugar may be one of the culprits that is making you feel bad. This is ironic because you may experience a high when you first drink or eat it, but after awhile you will lose this high. It is hard to break your relationship with sugar because it is addictive.

Do you know how much sugar is considered acceptable by the American Heart Association? Of course, there may be stricter limits if you are diabetic or have other health or dietary restrictions.

Let’s take a look at sugar intake and ways to manage sugar on the road.

Sugar on the Road

The point of this blog is not to say you cannot eat sugar, because your body needs sugar to function. You should just be aware of what you are eating and drinking. So, before you reach your hand into the bag of Halloween candy this year, just keep in mind the amount of sugar you are consuming!

Have a safe and happy Halloween!
