The Courage to Create: From Truck Driver to Inventor with James (J.R.) Boyce

The Courage to Create

Innovation rarely begins with perfect conditions. More often, it begins with curiosity, learning, and the courage to take the first step. Neuroscience shows that when we embrace new experiences and challenge ourselves to learn, the brain forms new neural pathways, strengthening our capacity for creativity, problem-solving, and growth. Every small step forward literally reshapes the brain, turning possibility into progress.

This season is a tribute to Fred our mascot whose inspiration came from our CEO’s grandfather and to every person who has ever started with nothing more than an idea.

I Love Learning Podcast, S4 EP10: James (J.R.) Boyce

Have you ever experienced something frustrating over and over again and thought, “There has to be a better way”? What if that frustration was actually the beginning of your next great idea?

In this episode of I Love Learning, I had the opportunity to talk with James “JR” Boyce, a professional truck driver with nearly 22 years of experience and the creator of Trucker Tote, an in-cab organization and safety solution designed by a driver for drivers. What I loved about JR’s story is that he never set out to become an entrepreneur. He simply wanted to solve a problem he experienced every day behind the wheel. After a frightening experience on the highway when an unsecured item flew across his truck and struck him, he began thinking about how something as simple as keeping belongings secure could make a meaningful difference in driver safety. That experience eventually led him to develop Trucker Tote.

But what really stood out to me was how JR approaches learning and personal growth. He shared how making small, consistent improvements helped him lose approximately 370 pounds, and how that same mindset eventually shaped his approach to creating a product. As a learning scientist, I love this connection. We sometimes think innovation requires a breakthrough moment, but often it begins with curiosity, experimentation, and a willingness to keep trying when something doesn’t work. JR didn’t have a background in product development or entrepreneurship. He learned along the way, tested ideas, built prototypes, connected with others, and continued making improvements. His story reminds us that you don’t have to know everything before you begin creating something meaningful.

One of my favorite parts of our conversation was hearing JR talk about the impact he hopes to make. For him, Trucker Tote isn’t just about organizing a truck. It’s about preventing distractions, protecting drivers, and helping the trucking industry think differently about safety. We talked about how small changes can have a tremendous impact, especially when we stop treating safety as a checklist and start thinking about the people behind every decision. I also loved that JR still sees himself as a truck driver solving truck driver problems. There’s something powerful about that. Innovation doesn’t always come from someone with a fancy title or a big company. Sometimes it comes from someone doing the work every day who has the courage to ask a better question.

JR’s story is exactly why I created this season, The Courage to Create. Every one of us has the ability to recognize problems, learn something new, and create change. Sometimes courage isn’t one giant leap. It’s a series of small steps, each one moving us closer to something meaningful. And as JR reminded us at the end of our conversation, sometimes the smallest action we can take is simply telling someone we care about them.
