Luma Connection #50: Pass the Torch
Collaboration and connection are important for our social-emotional well-being. Importantly, Luma has conducted research and published the benefits for creating learning communities remotely. This year, Luma will provide specific strategies you can implement to connect learners remotely. We are calling these strategies our Luma Connections.
Teaching Tool: LumaLive®
This is Luma’s synchronous or same time meeting tool. This online tool allows learners to interact with each other to explore a topic and to discuss key concepts, share experiences, interact with each other, and to ask questions in real time. Interactions are in real-time and can be mentor-learner, learner-to-content, learner-to-self, and learner-to-learner.
Tip: Pass the Torch
The instructor does not always need to direct the conversation and who gets to respond. Instead, try this Pass the Torch Technique that lets learners lead the discussion by selecting who will respond next or elaborate on a topic.
Here is how to use the Pass the Torch Technique:

Present the discussion topic or question and give learners adequate thinking and writing time.
- Select the first person to respond, and say, “I pass the torch to…”
- To add additional ideas, elaboration, or clarifying information to the current question or topic, that learner will choose the next person to respond and say, “I now pass the torch to….”
- Repeat for each discussion question or topic.
