The Courage to Create: From Success to Significance with Ray Lampkins

The Courage to Create

Innovation rarely begins with perfect conditions. More often, it begins with curiosity, learning, and the courage to take the first step. Neuroscience shows that when we embrace new experiences and challenge ourselves to learn, the brain forms new neural pathways, strengthening our capacity for creativity, problem-solving, and growth. Every small step forward literally reshapes the brain, turning possibility into progress.

This season is a tribute to Fred our mascot whose inspiration came from our CEO’s grandfather and to every person who has ever started with nothing more than an idea.

I Love Learning Podcast, S4 EP12: Ray Lampkins

Have you ever thought about all the things you could create if you stopped worrying about having all the answers and simply followed your curiosity? Sometimes the biggest opportunities in life begin with something as simple as asking, “What if I tried something new?”

In this episode of I Love Learning, I had the opportunity to sit down with Ray Lampkins, better known as Trucking Ray, a professional truck driver, entrepreneur, podcaster, and someone who truly believes in the power of positivity and human connection. What I loved most about our conversation was that Ray joined me right from the sleeper berth of his truck! After more than a decade behind the wheel, he hasn’t let his career define the limits of what he can create. He’s launched his own podcast, That’s Delivered, created Three Axel Coffee, and developed an app designed to help drivers connect, reflect, and manage aspects of their daily lives. His story reminds us that creativity doesn’t require a certain job title or background. It starts with curiosity and the willingness to learn something new.

One of my favorite things Ray said was, “I don’t claim to know it all. I just want to learn about it all.” As a learning scientist, I absolutely love that mindset. Ray shared how he learned about coffee roasting by connecting with people in his community and being willing to learn from their experiences. We also talked about the challenges truck drivers face, including loneliness, negativity, and feeling disconnected while spending long hours on the road. Ray believes that creating something positive, whether it’s a podcast, a business, or a supportive community, can help people rediscover their purpose. I especially appreciated his passion for journaling and reflection. His app gives drivers a place to record their thoughts, track parts of their daily routines, and connect with others. Learning doesn’t always happen in a classroom. Sometimes it happens when we take a moment to reflect on our experiences and recognize what they’re teaching us.

Another part of our conversation that stayed with me was Ray’s perspective on the difference between success and significance. Success can sometimes feel like checking boxes and reaching the next milestone, but significance is about the difference we make in someone else’s life. Ray shared that something as simple as mentoring another person or passing along knowledge we’ve spent years gaining can create an impact far beyond our own accomplishments. I love that because it connects so beautifully to this season, The Courage to Create. Creating isn’t always about launching a company or inventing something new. Sometimes it’s about creating opportunities, meaningful relationships, and a sense of belonging for someone who needs it.

Ray’s story is a reminder that you don’t have to have everything figured out to begin. You just have to stay curious, keep learning, and be willing to take that first step. Whether you’re a truck driver, an entrepreneur, a leader, or someone with an idea you’ve been afraid to pursue, there is something inside you worth exploring.
